TOYOTA ANNOUNCES ADDITION OF LIFTBACK MODELS
TO COROLLA AND SPRINTER SERIES

 

TOKYO―Toyota Motor Company and Toyota Motor Sales Company jointly announced that a new liftback model has been added to the Corolla and Sprinter series of passenger cars. These new models will be marketed domestically beginning January 14th.

Toyota developed the liftback models in order to satisfy growing consumer demands for passenger cars able to meet diversified uses. All the liftback models combine sporty styling, luxurious comfort, and multi-purpose utility. They represent a new breakthrough in passenger car design.

The new liftback models are powered by Type 12T (1,588 cc) engines and are equipped with Toyota's unique TTC-L emissions cleansing system utilizing a method of lean air-fuel mixture combustion. All the new models have passed Japan's tough 1976 emission control standards.

The main features of the new Corolla and Sprinter liftbacks are
  • Handsome styling which gives a "sporty" look but does not sacrifice utility.
  • Wide-opening, flip-up rear hatch designed to allow maximum access, thereby making the loading and unloading of luggage easy.
  • Improved roof styling and moulded-type ceiling which makes for greater comfort through wider overhead clearance in back.
  • Folding rear seat which allows entire floor space in back to be used for carrying luggage if necessary.
  • Rear window-wiper (standard in some models, optional in others).
  • Back-door lock release which lets the driver unlock the flip-up door (standard in some models, optional in others).
  • A tonneau cover to conceal luggage and valuables (standard in some models, optional in others).
  • A warning light that flashes when brake oil falls below a certain level―an added safety feature.
  • A total of twelve liftback models are available, six models with 4-speed transmissions, and six models with 5-speed transmissions.
  • For maximum driving performance and increased fuel efficiency, the most effective final reduction gear ratio has been provided to fit the special characteristics of particular models and transmissions.
