TOYOTA TO DISPLAY 37 VEHICLES AT
INTERNATIONAL AUTO SHOW-OSAKA

EX-8, Symbolizing New Toyota Technology, Three Other Special Exhibition Vehicles

Toyota Motor Company, Ltd. and Toyota Motor Sales Company, Ltd. will display a total of 37 vehicles at the upcoming International Auto Show-Osaka, to be held from November 21 (Friday) through November 27 (Thursday) at Osaka International Fairgrounds in Tanaka, Minato-Ward, Osaka City.

Toyota will display 33 vehicles from its current line (22 passenger cars and 11 commercial vehicles) and four special exhibits (one passenger car and three commercial vehicles). Highlighting Toyota's display will be the Toyota EX-8, symbol of new directions for Toyota's technology, and the Hi-Lux RV-3, a versatile recreational vehicle.

For the Auto Show-Osaka, Toyota has adopted the slogan, "Toyota: Paving the Way to a New Age," and the motto, "Progressive Toyota Technology." The Toyota display will stress three themes: 1) the Toyota line satisfies a wide range of customer demands; 2) its special exhibits offer new solutions to the problems of auto manufacture in the 1980s; and 3) its automotive developments are geared to the present age of resource and energy conservation.

Passenger Car Pavilion

Toyota's exhibit will include 22 passenger cars from its current line―representing all sizes of cars from the Starlet up to the Crown. The exhibit will feature the Toyota EX-8, whose top quality and performance, fuel efficiency and resource conservation symbolize Toyota's vision of a new generation of automobiles.

The Toyota EX-8 (figures are Toyota Motor data)

  1. The outstanding, fuel-efficient 5M-GEU engine (six-cylinder DOHC, 2759cc EFI type), offering fine performance―170ps/5600rpm maximum output and 24.0 kg・m/4400rpm maximum torque―and greatly lowered noise and need for maintenance by the use of a lash adjuster.
  2. Aerodynamic excellence: slanted nose; smoothing of press doors, large urethane bumpers and specially-designed 4-lamp halogen headlights to create a unified body surface; optimal front and rear window angles; trunk spoiler and other excellent equipment. Drag coefficient has been reduced to 0.356, and the results are stability at high speeds and heigthened fuel efficiency.
  3. The widest tire tread in its vehicle class (1450 mm on the rear wheels), four-wheel ventilated disc brakes, four-wheel independent suspension and other features also improve stability.
  4. New equipment and mechanical features are designed to satisfy the demands of a new automotive age. Electronic equipment includes digital speedometer, LED (light emitting diode) tachometer and fluorescent tube gauges (fuel, water temperature)―eliminating the need for needle-type indicators on all meters and giving the driver a truly efficient, modern feeling. Other equipment includes a "speak monitor" and "cruise computer."
Toyota will also have a technology-oriented PR booth at the Passenger Car Pavilion, to showcase the results of Toyota R&D. The booth will feature these innovations
  1. The world's first synthesized-voice warning system―the Speak Monitor.
  2. The high output, highly fuel-efficient 5M-GEU-type engine (special exhibition unit).
  3. The M-TEU-type engine, Japan's first gasoline engine combining induction swirl ports and turbocharger.
  4. The straight-line six-cylinder high performance IG-EU-type engine, the lightest 2-liter class engine in the world.
  5. The world's first two-way overdrive four-speed automatic transmission, making a great contribution to fuel efficiency and quiet ride.

Commercial Vehicle Pavilion

Toyota will display 11 vehicles from its current line―designed to satisfy a wide range of customer demands. This exhibit will highlight three very special vehicles: the Hi-Lux RV-3 (based on the. Hi-Lux 4WD built for export to the U.S.), Toyota's answer to the rising demand for recreational vehicles; the "Rohme-Go" (based on the Toyota Hi-Ace) owned by the well-known author Hiroyuki Itsuki; and the Lite-Ace Mini Handi-cab (based on the Lite-Ace), designed especially for use by the handicapped―a Toyota response to the designation of 1981 as the International Year of the Handicapped.

  1. Hi-Lux RV-3
A new type of leisure vehicle, whose outstanding performance at high cruising speeds gives the driver the sensation of operating a passenger car. Based on the U.S.-market version of the 4WD Hi-Lux, the RV-3 features a detachable steel cabin, a double-partition rear door opening up and down for greater access, a tool box and other equipment. A "moonroof" over the driver's seat and a black interior color scheme give the RV-3 a sporty image.
  2. Rhome-Go
An entirely new idea in "one-box" cars, embodies the concept of "Enjoyable Private Space in Motion," devised by a project staff headed by Hiroyuki Itsuki, the famous Japanese novelist. The Rhome-Go is based on the Hi-Ace Diesel and features 4-speed automatic transmission, power steering, ventilated front disc brakes and other equipment. The interior is equipped with a variety of electrical appliances, which utilize a specially equipped generator as a power source.
  3. Lite-Ace Mini Handi-cab
To facilitate use by handicapped people confined to wheelchairs who ride to work or school with a friend or attendant driving, this vehicle is equipped with a hydraulic lift for boarding or exiting, special wheelchair-use headrests and seat belts, central control switch and handy storage box. These features allow the handicapped person to ride comfortably without having to leave his or her wheelchair.

Toyota will also have an exhibit in the Theme Pavilion, which will illustrate "The Development of Automotive Engines." This exhibit will include six typical examples of Toyota engines developed over the years.
