TOYOTA MARKETS NEW SOARER TURBO

Features Turbocharger-Equipped M-TEU Engine Incorporating Unique Toyota Design

TOKYO―Toyota Motor Company, Ltd. and Toyota Motor Sales Company, Ltd. today jointly released for nationwide sale the new Soarer, available in two selections―the VR Turbo and VII Turbo―and equipped with the Toyota-developed M-TEU 6-cylinder 1988cc engine with turbocharger.

The M-TEU engine mounted on the Soarer Turbo is equipped with a knock control system with twin sensors, detecting even the most minute knock for optimum control of ignition timing, as well as a unique Toyota design combining a turbocharger and induction swirl ports for vastly improved power, fuel efficiency and quiet ride performance.

All Soarer Turbo models include 4-speed automatic transmission with overdrive as standard equipment, which in combination with the M-TEU engine supplements power, fuel economy and quietness with fine road handling characteristics.

The main features of the Soarer Turbo are as follows.

  1. Powerful, Fuel Efficient M-TEU Engine

The M-TEU gasoline engine mounted on the Soarer Turbo is a turbocharger-mounted version of the highly evaluated Toyota M-TEU engine (maximum horsepower 125 ps, maximum torque 17.0 kg·m). Through adoption of the Toyota-developed twin sensor-equipped knock control system with induction swirl ports, maximum horsepower in the M-TEU has been boosted to 145 ps at 5,600 rpm and maximum torque to 21.5 kg·m at 3,000 rpm, greatly elevating power and fuel efficiency.

  1. Four-Speed Automatic Transmission with Overdrive
Superb Fuel Efficiency and Road Handling

To supplement its new and fuel efficient turbo engine, the Soarer Turbo also features a 4-speed automatic transmission with overdrive. Optimization of the final gear ratio and other advances adopted in this transmission have helped provide fine fuel efficiency of 8.5 km/L under the Japanese Ministry of Transport (MOT) 10-mode measurement system and 16.0 km/L at 60 km/h (MOT notification values).
This Toyota automatic transmission greatly facilitates smooth acceleration and excellent handling from low to high speeds, and quiet running performance at high cruising speeds.

  1. Widely Expanded Equipment Selection

The Soarer VR Turbo and VII Turbo are equipped with the same top-grade equipment as the regular Soarer VR and VII models already available. The Turbo versions, however, also include the following features.

  1. Soarer VR Turbo

For accurate monitoring of turbocharger performance, turbocharger operation indicator and system malfunction warning lamps are clustered within easy view on the instrument panel. Standard equipment features include lower bumper extensions and quarter sunshades, while a model equipped with West German-made aluminum wheels is also available.

  1. Soarer VII Turbo
This model is equipped with a boost meter indicating turbocharger pressure and a turbocharger malfunction warning lamp clustered on the instrument panel. Superb braking performance is provided through adoption of ventilated disc brakes, more rigid suspension system, 195/70HR14 radial tires and other improvements. Lower bumper extensions are also included as standard equipment.
Available as options are special two-tone interior color designs, body stripes, and limited slip differential (in the VR Turbo) to enhance driving stability and durability.
The body colors available in the overall Soarer series have also been expanded with the marketing of the new Soarer Turbo, a "super white" version added to the Soarer 2800 GT Extra and a "flaming red" now available in all other models.
