TOYOTA MARKETS LITE-ACE "HANDI-CAB" MODELS

TOKYO―Toyota Motor Co., Ltd. and Toyota Motor Sales Co., Ltd. today announced the addition of four new "Handi-Cab" models to the popular-size Lite-Ace cab-over truck series, and released them for sale nationwide in Japan.

The Handi-Cab was specially developed for transporting persons confined to wheelchairs. An hydraulic lift attached to the rear door enables boarding and alighting without leaving the chairs. Other features include pantograph-type clamps to secure wheelchairs inside the vehicle and prevent sliding and vibration while on the road.

Toyota previously introduced a Handi-Cab version of the Hi-Ace van in 1977, and 345 units have already been delivered to welfare groups, hospitals and facilities for handicapped persons throughout Japan, garnering high praise for design and utility, In response to rising demand from handicapped persons and those involved with the handicapped, Toyota has developed a Handi-Cab model for the Lite-Ace, one vehicle size below the Hi-Ace.

The United Nations General Assembly last year designated 1981 as the International Year of the Disabled with the goal of "Improving both the physical and social mobility of disabled persons." To fullfill this aim, Toyota earlier this year marketed the "Friend-matic," a car designed for persons with lower extremity handicaps, and has since continued to strive toward development of vehicles easy for the handicapped to drive and ride in.

Major features of the Handi-Cab are as follows.

  1. Hydraulic Lift
This lift makes it possible for persons in wheelchairs to board and alight from the Handi-Cab without leaving their chairs. It is possible to operate the lift by remote control, and it can be easily folded up and stored away in the vehicle itself when not in use. Also adopted is a platform in the rear of the vehicle designed to prevent slips and falls, together with special rear lights, all in the interest of ensuring safety.
  2. Pantograph-Type Wheelchair Clamps
To secure wheelchairs inside the Handi-Cab, Toyota has adopted a pantograph-type clamp which holds the chairs firmly at the front and rear of the wheels. Used in combination with lashing belts, these sophisticated mechanisms protect wheelchairs against all types of shock and vibration. The belts have been made easy to attach and remove.
    Note
The models described in this release are available only in Japan.
  3. Special Reclining Wheelchair
The Lite-Ace Handi-Cab is equipped with a special wheelchair configured to reduce fatigue on long drives. In addition to headrests and a reclining back, newly designed seat-belts with the fulcrum located on the vehicle floor enhance both safety and comfort.
  4. Improved Interior Equipment
The floor of the Lite-Ace Handi-Cab is covered with a soothingly colored Loneleum, and features improved noise insulation and heat retention characteristics. In addition, the seats can be reversed to enable free movement by those assisting handicapped passengers. Reading lights and tables are included as standard equipment in three of the models and optional in the other, greatly enhancing the comfort and utility of the Handi-Cab interior.
