TOYOTA INTRODUCES NEW CELICA
MODIFIED FOR HIGHER PERFORMANCE
TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION has modified its Celica specialty car (XX, coupe and liftback models), with the new models to be marketed on August 17 at Toyota Corolla dealers throughout Japan.
The changes include
- Improved dynamic performance through addition of new, high-performance engines, including 4-valve twin cam and inter-cooler-equipped turbocharged units.
- Design improvements including new headlamps (coupe, liftback), flaps and new combination lamps.
- New components, such as electronically controlled 4-speed automatic transmission (ECT-S) and 60 tires designed for use on an expanded range of Toyota models.
These changes were made to enhance the already high performance of the Celica, as well as reinforcing the sporty, high-quality image of the car.
Major features and specifications of the new Celica are as follows
Major features
- New, high-performance engines
-
- 4-valve twin cam engine
- The new Celicas (coupe and liftback models) will be powered by a new, high-performance 4A Twin Cam 16 engine (4A-GEU type, 4-cylinder, DOHC, 1,587cc), replacing the previous 2T-GEU type twin cam engine (1,588cc).
This new 4A Twin Cam 16 engine, with its four valves per cylinder and combination of advanced mechanisms such as T-VIS (Toyota Variable Induction System) and electronics systems such as "EFI-D," delivers maximum output of 130PS/6,600rpm and maximum torque of 15.2 kg-m/5,200rpm, the highest figures in its class. Similarly high is fuel efficiency of 12.2 km per liter (5-speed transmission models) achieved in the Ministry of Transportation's 10-mode test.
-
- Turbocharged engine with inter-cooler
- A water-cooled inter-cooler has been added to the M-type turbocharged engine (M-TEU type, 6 cylinders, 1,988cc) on the Celica XX 2000 Turbo series, further improving turbocharger performance. Engine power has been increased significantly to 160PS/5,400 rpm and torque has been raised to 23.5 kg-m/3,000 rpm, while improving fuel efficiency to 9.0 km per liter (4-speed automatic transmission) for the 10-mode test.
-
- Improvements in 2.8 liter twin cam engine
- The compression ratio has been upped from 8.8 to 9.2 and a microcomputer-controlled ignition timing incorporated in the 5M-GEU type engine (6-cylinder, DOHC 2,759cc) on the Celica XX 2800GT, improving performance by increasing output to 175PS/5,600 rpm and torque to 24.5 kg-m/4,400 rpm. Fuel efficiency has been boosted to a fine 9.3 km per liter (5-speed transmission) for the 10-mode test.
In addition, Toyota's unique TCCS (Toyota computer controlled system) has been adopted for the 1G (1G-EU type, 6-cylinder, 1,988cc) engine, resulting in improved fuel efficiency and driveability.
- Upgraded exterior designs
- The fully retractable lamps of the current Celica XX have been added to the new Celica coupe and liftback models, for a sharper, more sporty look.
- The design of the flaps has been changed in the new Celica XX, coupe and liftback models to further improve aerodynamics. In addition, the design of the rear combination lamp was changed totally to emphasize the sporty qualities of the cars.
- The color metal trim of the rear hatch and the rear bumper on the new Celica XX now matches the color of the body. Sporty, door-mounted mirrors have been adopted on all models.
- New mechanisms and equipment
-
- Electronically controlled 4-speed automatic transmission (ECT-S)
- An electronically controlled 4-speed automatic transmission (ECT-S) is now standard equipment on the new Celica XX 2800GT, allowing the driver to choose any of the three driving modes ("economy," "power" and "manual") depending on road conditions and driver preference.
-
- 60 size tires
- The 60 size tires (195/60R15, 86H) available optionally on the earlier Celica XX 2000GT Twin Cam 24 are now standard or optional equipment on the new Celica XX, coupe and liftback GT and the new Celica XX 2000 Turbo series.
Further changes include a new steering wheel and high-grade upholstery materials.
