TOYOTA INTRODUCES ELECTRO MULTIVISION

Used in Toyota Soarer; 3.0-Liter Twin-Cam Model Added to Series

TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION announced today that it had developed the Toyota Electro Multivision instrument panel system, the first of its kind in the world, and that it will use the system aboard the Gran Turismo Soarer.

Toyota also announced that at the same time it will market a new 3.0-liter twin cam engine (6M-GEU type, 6 cylinder, 2954cc) model in the Soarer series.

Toyota Electro Multivision can be utilized as an onboard television. It has a full-color CRT display (Type 6 cathode ray tube) that functions as a visual meter. This is the first time in the world for such a system to be used with a mass production model, and its use will enable the driver to obtain necessary information on the TV display about the condition of the engine, the drive train, and other aspects of the car's operation, as well as information on fuel economy.

As Toyota's top-of-the-line specialty car, the Soarer was first marketed in February 1981. It was originally equipped with a 2.8-liter twin cam engine, an electronic display meter, an electronically controlled suspension, and other advanced technology. The new model in the Soarer series has further technical improvements that raise it to a higher level of quality and performance.

  1. Use of Toyota Electro Multivision

The Toyota Electro Multivision system utilizes a full-color CRT display (Type 6 cathode ray tube) that functions as a meter display, the world's first such system used in a mass production model. It also makes possible the reception of television programs when the car is stationary. The system is mounted on the 3-liter, GT-Limited automatic shift versions, the top grade versions of the Soarer line.

The CRT display provides such important information as engine revolutions, shift position, fuel consumption trends, and warnings on any abnormalities that have occurred. The driver can freely select, at the touch of a switch, these different types of information.

When the car is stationary, it is possible to receive television broadcasts and to use the screen for video viewing. This system thus carries the instrument panel to heights beyond its use up to now, transforming it into a multi-function information transmission system. (See attached sheet for details on the Toyota Electro Multivision System).

  1. New 3.0-Liter Twin Cam Engine

The engine for mounting on the highest grade model in the Soarer line has been switched from the earlier 2.8-liter Twin Cam 5M-GEU type (6-cylinder, 2759cc) to the 3.0-liter Twin Cam 6M-G engine (6M-GEU Type, 6-cylinder, 2954cc). The 6M-G engine is based on the 5M-GEU type, but has a larger engine displacement and utilizes a knock-control device. And performance has been improved, with maximum output of 190 PS (5,600 rpm) and maximum torque of 26.5 kg.m (4,400 rpm). Also, 10-Mode fuel efficiency has been improved to 9.1 km/L (Ministry of Transport values) for manual transmission models, up from the 9.0 km/L of the previous models.
