TOYOTA INTRODUCES FULL MODEL CHANGE CELICA
FWD High-Performance Specialty Car Sets New International
Standards in Performance and Styling
Toyota Motor Corporation is introducing a full model change of its Celica specialty car. The new model will be marketed today through the Toyota Corolla sales channel.
Since its appearance in 1970 as Japan's first specialty car, the Celica has consistently been a pioneer in terms of both performance and style. After placing first overall in the Safari Rally two years in succession, the Toyota Celica has won an international reputation in the world of motor sports.

In recent years, higher basic performance and a more refined style have been sought in the youth-oriented specialty car market. The new Celica reflects both those trends.
The new Celica was developed as a FWD specialty car meeting top international standards in terms of both performance and style.
- Styling
-
The totally new exterior design is the direct result of Toyota's quest for the ultimate in aerodynamics. The Celica's wide-and-low lines with its "stream surface," with wide front and rear fenders and narrow body sections, is both functional and beautiful. The glass hatch cabin, which enfolds the center pillar, the fully retractable headlights and other new touches place this sporty three-door lift-back in a class of its own.In aerodynamic characteristics, Celicas with rear spoilers boast low drag coefficient of Cd 0.31.
- Interior
- Advanced ergonomic engineering that takes full advantage of the benefits of the FWD configuration has made it possible to achieve greater roominess and comfort. A revamped instrument panel and new eight-way sports seats have also been added.
- Engine
-
Three engines are available: the 2.0 liter 3S-GELU and 1.6 liter 4A-GELU incorporating the T-VIS (Toyota variable injection system), TCCS (Toyota computer control system) and other systems which have contributed to bringing about high performance and low fuel costs; and the 1.8 liter 1S-iLU with Ci (central injection). The 3S-GELU superlative performance gives the new Celica with a 5-speed manual transmission a 16.0-second time over 400 meters.
Engine | Displacement (cc) |

- Suspension
-
Toyota has developed a new strut-type 4-wheel independent suspension that perfectly complements the advantages of an FWD high-performance specialty car. This suspension ensures superb handling stability and driving comfort. On the front suspension, a new lower brace connects the lower-arm links on both sides. In addition, on high-performance models the strut towers are connected directly to the engine bulkhead via special performance rods, for improved rigidity and quicker steering response.
- Tires, Brakes
- The standard specifications for the Celica include 195/60 tires and 4-wheel disc brakes. Together they improve the Celica's handling, stability and brake control.
- New Systems and New Equipment
- Certain Celicas are available with tiIt-and-telescopic steering with integrated memory, a "live sound" speaker system, new eight-way sports seats, a tilt-and-slide sun roof powered by electric motor and many other new features as either standard or optional equipment.
