TOYOTA ANNOUNCES PRODUCTION. DOMESTIC REGISTRATION.
EXPORT AND OVERSEAS PRODUCTION RESULTS
FOR DECEMBER 1989 AND CALENDAR 1989
Toyota City―TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION today announced its production, domestic registration, export, and overseas production results for December 1989 and for the whole year.
RESULTS FOR DECEMBER 1989
Production
Total production for December was 319,001 units, an increase of 4.2% from the figure of December 1988. This was the first time in four months that total production exceeded that of the same month of the previous year.
The production breakdown was 254,906 passenger cars, up 11.7%, and 64,095 trucks and buses, down 17.6% from the previous year's figures. Meanwhile, overseas production was 38,438, up 72.3% from the figure of December 1988.
Domestic Registrations
Total domestic registrations were 187,584 units, up 12.1% from the previous December's figure. This was the ninth consecutive month in which domestic registrations exceeded those in the same month of the previous year, and it saw the largest number of registrations ever for the month of December. (The previous record was 167,391 units reached in December 1988.)
The breakdown of domestic registrations was 144,919 passenger cars, up 13.1%, and 42,665 trucks and buses, up 8.8%, both versus the levels of December 1988.
As a result, Toyota held a 30.4% share of the total market, up 0.5% from its share a year ago.
Exports
Total exports in December were 108,194 units, down 15.9% from those of December 1988. This was the fourth consecutive month in which exports dropped below those for the same month of the previous year.
The breakdown of exports was 73,833 passenger cars, down 7.0%, and 34,361 trucks and buses, down 30.2%, compared with the December 1988 results.
RESULTS FOR JANUARY-DECEMBER 1989
Production
Total production for 1989 was 3,975,902 units, up 0.2% from that of the previous year. This was the second consecutive year in which total production exceeded that of the previous year. It also marked a new annual production record. (The previous highest figure was 3,968,707 units, reached in 1988.)
Production of passenger cars was 3,055,101 units, a 2.4% increase, while production of trucks and buses totaled 920,801, down 6.6%. Overseas production, meanwhile, reached 471,987 units, up 93.1% from the previous year's figure.
Domestic Registrations
Total domestic registrations for 1989 were 2,308,863 units, an 8.9% increase over those of the previous year and the eighth consecutive annual increase. It also marked a new annual record. (The previous high was 2,120,273 units, attained in 1988.)
Domestic registrations included 1,760,966 passenger cars, an increase of 7.8% over the result of the previous year, and 547,897 trucks and buses, an increase of 12.5% over 1988's figure.
As a result, Toyota held a 31.8% share of the total market, up 0.3% from its share a year ago.
Exports
Total exports for 1989 were 1,669,130 units, down 8.1% from those of the previous year. This was the first time in two years that total exports fell below those of the previous year.
Exports included 1,139,680 passenger cars, a 7.5% decrease from those of the previous year, and 529,450 trucks and buses, down 9.3% from the 1988 result.
