TOYOTA INTRODUCES CYNOS COUPE

Toyota City―TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION today announced the introduction of the Cynos, its new, small, sporty four-passenger coupe. The Cynos is expected to appeal particularly to younger drivers. The car's sleek looks and peppy 1.5-liter engine offer style and performance at an affordable price. The Cynos will be offered in two grades, α (alpha) and β (beta) , and sales will begin immediately nationwide.

Distinction and Style

The Cynos has a distinctive, curvaceous body with a low, sweeping hood and high rear deck. Flush surfaces all round give the Cynos a low drag coefficient of 0.32, which significantly reduces wind noise and boosts fuel economy. The new Coupe comes in six colors―including a specially developed color, turquoise mica metallic―that enhance its sporty look.

Fun-to-Drive Performance

The Cynos is equipped with two of Toyota's latest four-cylinder, 16-valve, 1.5-liter twin-cam engines: the 5E-FE on the α-grade model, and the 5E-FHE on the β-model. Both engines are equipped with electronic fuel injection (EFI), and are widely acclaimed for their sophisticated balance of high performance and excellent fuel economy. The 5E-FHE also comes with variable induction and knock control systems and a dual-exhaust manifold, providing exceptionally high torque even at low RPM.

For greater maneuverability and stability, the Cynos uses the MacPherson strut-type front suspension and a trailing twist beam rear suspension.

The β-grade cars come with the optional Toyota Electronic Modulated Suspension (TEMS). This system monitors vehicle speed, steering angle, vertical g force and brakes, automatically adjusting shock absorber damping force for greater riding comfort, stability, and handling.

Also optional with the β-grade models is an electronically controlled transmission, or ECT-S. This type of transmission allows the driver, at the touch of a button, to choose gear shift points suited to changing road conditions and the driver's preferences.

Safety Devices and Other Improvements

Standard on the Cynos are such safety items as side-impact beams and seat-belt warning devices. Three-point rear seat belts and four-wheel anti-lock brakes (ABS) are available as options on both grades. For greater visibility, a high-mount stop lamp is standard on β-grade models and optional with the α-grade cars.

Other features include a seven-speaker Cynos Super Live Sound System complete with acoustic resonance woofer.
