Toyota City―TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION today announced the establishment of Toyota Motor Manufacturing (UK) Limited in Derby, England. The new company will be responsible for the management of Toyota's recently announced automobile and engine plants to be built in Derbyshire, England and Clwyd, North Wales.
Capitalized at £250 million, Toyota Motor Manufacturing is Toyota's first wholly owned European manufacturing company, and at full operation will be capable of producing 200,000 passenger cars and engines annually. Construction for both plants is expected to begin next spring, with completion scheduled for the end of 1991.
Also announced today was the company's Board of Directors. Mr. Junji Numata, a managing director on Toyota's Board of Directors in Japan and head of the company's European operations, has been named chairman of the new company. Managing director will be Mr. Yukihisa Hirano, currently general manager of Toyota's Machines & Tools Division. Appointed as deputy managing director and company secretary is Mr. Takeshi Nagaya, who will be joined by Mr. Hiroaki Watanabe, also named deputy managing director. In the future, Toyota plans to add local executives to the company's Board as well.
Hiring of British senior staff, including directors of manufacturing and corporate affairs, will begin in early 1990, with recruitment of managers and office staff to follow. Production staff for the two plants will be added beginning in late 1991.
"Toyota Motor Manufacturing (UK) will make a major contribution to the local communities, to the U.K. economy, and to the European auto industry as a whole," said Mr. Numata. "We look forward to integrating into the local and European communities in every way. We're intent on becoming a truly European company and will be working with the European business community."
