FIRST CAR ROLLS OFF THE LINE AT TMM ' S NEW SECOND PLANT
Tokyo―TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION announced today that the first Camry rolled off the assembly line at the new second plant of Toyota Motor Manufacturing, U.S.A., Inc. (TMM), its U.S. manufacturing arm. TMM recently completed construction of the second plant as part an expansion plan, and the first Camry off the line marked the start of its operations.
Besides the Camry, from this fall the expanded TMM plant will also begin exclusive production of the Avalon, an all-new large sedan, for Toyota in the U.S. The plant is expected to produce a combined total of about 40,000 units of the Camry and Avalon by the end of 1994. The second plant eventually will have an annual production capacity of 200,000 units.
With the first and second plants combined, TMM's total production capacity will eventually reach about 400,000 units.
TMM began producing the Camry in May 1988, and in 1993 the first plant produced 234,000 units. Exports of the TMM-made Camry to Taiwan started in 1989. Current export destinations include Japan, Europe, and the Middle East.
