Full-Model Change Introduced For Celica Convertible
Special Edition Celica Model Also Launched to Commemorate
Winning Of The 1994 WRC Manufacturers' Title
Tokyo―TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION today introduced a full-model change for its four-seater Celica Convertible. Sales will be through Toyota Corolla outlets nationwide.
The Celica Convertible is a Toyota product modified by ASC Inc.* of the U.S., who manufactures and installs the electrically operated soft-top.
With the full-model change announced today, the exterior styling of the Celica Convertible was given a new, distinct character, with a rounded body incorporating four separate headlamps. Performance has been boosted by increasing engine output and response, and increasing body rigidity. Also, the comfort provided by front and back seats has been enhanced, and anti-fog glass is used for the rear window. Monthly sales are expected to reach 100 units.Celica Convertible (Type X)
Besides the full-model change to the Celica Convertible, Toyota has also introduced today a special edition Celica to the SS-I lineup to commemorate its winning of the Manufacturers' Title in the 1994 World Rally Championship (WRC). Sales of the special edition Celica also start today through Toyota Corolla outlets.
Outline of the Celica Convertible
- ExteriorExterior styling is characterized by supple curved surfaces combined with well defined edges. The front mask of the car features four round, separate high- and low-beam headlights. The trunk is independent, and the rear window is made of glass with an anti-fog function. All variations, except the Type X, are equipped with five-spoke aluminum wheels.
- InteriorInterior width and height have both been increased. The use of an outer fold mechanism, whereby the soft-top's guide rails fold outward toward the side of the car when opening, maintains maximum width and significantly increases rear-seat passenger comfort. The Celica Super Live Sound System, an 8-speaker sound system including an electronic AM/FM tuner and CD/cassette player, is standard on all models except the Type X.
- PerformanceThe 3S-GE, 2.0-liter, twin-cam engine boasts increased output and response due to improvements in such areas as the intake and exhaust ports and the valve system. The use of 15-inch tires and a strut-type, four-wheel independent suspension provides a sophisticated balance between controllability, stability, and riding comfort. The use of rear cross rods significantly increases body rigidity.Rationalizing the body structure and other design changes has reduced overall weight by a maximum of 100kg compared to previous models.
- SafetyTo provide a high level of safety, LED high-mount brake lamps are installed on all models. Also, a four-wheel antilock braking system (ABS) and a supplemental restraint system (SRS) driver's side air bag are provided as standard equipment on all models except the Type X.
