TERCEL FAMILY COMPLETELY REDONE

Toyota City―TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION introduced completely redesigned Tercel, Corsa, and Corolla II lineups for the Japanese market today. Styling, performance, improved interior comfort, and advanced safety features have all been emphasized in the three models to create "a perfect fit for the new lifestyle and youthful spirit" of the nineties.

  1. Youthful, polished style
Keeping in mind the theme of a "youthful exterior with an urban flavor," Toyota has designed two body styles―a three-door liftback and a four-door sedan―for the third-generation Tercel.
The three-door hatchback is characterized by a round, smoothly curved outline creating a futuristic, single-motion form.

The four-door sedan has a high-deck silhouette, a comfortable three-dimensional hood, and a fine radiator grille design, giving the car a stylish, tasteful look.

The exterior color line-up is based on vibrant, middle-range, chrome-based colors, with eight standard colors offered, including a new type of purple mica-metallic and a gray-green mica-metallic.

The body types adopted for each model are as follows
The body types adopted for each model
  1. Good response and high stability
In the gasoline-powered models, Toyota mounts two new second-generation high-efficiency twin-cam engines, a 1.3-liter and a 1.5-liter, to give the new Tercel family a solid boost in output and all-round response. Both engines utilize EFI and combine low fuel consumption with high torque characteristics at normal rpm.
Underneath, newly designed McPherson strut front suspension and stabilizer-equipped trailing twin beam rear suspension (FF model) were adopted, backed up by a tough body and a sturdy gearbox for quick-response performance. Moreover, the new layout optimizes stability characteristics by providing firmer control on both straightaways and turns.
The recently developed Stand-by 4WD model is equipped with the world's first rotary tri-blade linkup, which automatically assigns the appropriate torque to the rear wheels in response to rotational differences between the front and rear. The new system, which incorporates the improved design of four-link rear suspension with lateral rods, makes stable driving possible under difficult conditions, such as heavy snow.
  1. Improved interior comfort and advanced safety features
    1. Interior comfort
The main emphasis in the interior design was on functionality and the creation of smooth surfaces that inspire images of softness and spaciousness. The design enhances both the car's practical quality and its good taste.
The body design greatly reduces vibration and limits the amount of road and wind noise that penetrate the cabin, and seats have been improved to add better support and a more luxurious feel. Optional are a CD player or cassette deck for excellent "live" sound, particularly when combined with the six-speaker system designed for the Tercel, Corsa, and Corolla II.
In addition, Toyota added new and improved features and equipment such as a push-type heater control panel, a device that makes it difficult to lock keys inside the car, leather upholstery that minimizes soiling, door mirrors that can be electrically retracted into the body, and a shift position indicator at the center of the dashboard for cars with automatic transmissions.
    2. Improved safety features
In addition to safety considerations in the basic design, Toyota has improved, to the most exacting detail, several safety features.
Three-point seat belts for the rear seats have been fitted as a standard feature or as an option, depending on model grade. Three-point seat belt systems, tension-reducing anchors (in all three-door models), and adjustable shoulder belt anchors (in all four-door models) have been added to the front seat for improved effectiveness and comfort.
An anti-lock braking system (ABS) provides improved handling characteristics when braking on slippery roads. With installation of the ABS on the Stand-by 4WD vehicles and also, for the first time, on Toyota's diesel-powered vehicles, ABS is now offered as an option on all models.
Furthermore, a highly visible internalized LED high-mount brake lamp on the rear spoiler is offered either standard or as an option on all models. Also, screw-type fuel caps and flame-resistant interior materials are used on all models.
