Toyota Announces the PONAM-28 Motorboat
Toyota Launches Its Leisure Motorboat and Marine Engines
at the 36th Tokyo International Boat Show
Tokyo―TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION (TMC) announced today that it will unveil its PONAM-28*1 leisure motorboat and the SEAN*2 marine propulsive units at the 36th International Tokyo Boat Show, opening on February 7.
The PONAM-28 is a multipurpose cruiser of the largest class (less than 5 tons) that can be operated with a Class 4 license. It stands apart from other cruisers with its modern styling, a level of comfort that exceeds its class rating, and―due to its high-rigidity aluminum hull and other features-handling and safety characteristics that make it a good choice even for novices. Toyota designed and developed the PONAM-28 and has commissioned its manufacture in New Zealand.
The SEAN marine propulsive units are adapted versions of low-emission, high-performance automobile engines combined with high-reliability drives developed by Toyota to provide efficient propulsion and excellent balance with the engines. The M1KZ is a 3.0-liter, 160ps diesel-turbo engine based on the 1KZ engine used in the Hilux Surf and other models, while the M1UZ is a 4.0-liter, 260ps gasoline engine derived from the 1UZ engine used in the Celsior (Lexus LS 400) and other models.
Sales are scheduled to start this April. Because the PONAM-28 will be produced in limited quantities, initially it will only be available directly from Toyota.
*1PONAM is derived from the native New Zealand Maori word waipounam, meaning whale.
*2SEAN stands for Supreme Efficiency Advanced Nautical technology
