NEW US-BUILT TOYOTA CAVALIER
UNVEILED IN JAPAN

Tokyo―TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION (TMC) today introduced the Toyota Cavalier, a brand-new and highly distinctive model born in the USA, yet carefully attuned to Japanese market needs and driving conditions. Sales of the Toyota Cavalier will start in January 1996.

The result of unprecedented cooperation between TMC and General Motors Corporation (GM), the Toyota Cavalier is a landmark vehicle: The first GM-built sedan and coupe to be sold, with right-hand steering, through 1,100 Toyota sales outlets in Japan.

The Toyota Cavalier, stylish, casual, and contemporary with an enticing all-American flavor, brings a new variety of vehicle to Toyota's domestic line-up. It is the embodiment of an epoch-making agreement reached by Toyota and GM in November 1993 for Toyota to market GM cars in Japan under the Toyota nameplate.

Beginning in January 1996, the "Toyota" channel sales outlets* in Japan will start sales of the new Toyota Cavalier, a car which―with compact body, right-hand steering and efficient 2.4-liter twin-cam four cylinder engine―is especially well-suited to Japanese roads.

*The "Toyota" sales channel, established in 1946, is the longest established of the five sales channels for Toyota.

Along with the vehicle itself, the Toyota Cavalier project brings a valued new impetus to Japanese-American industrial relations. As an import from the US, the car also contributes to the promotion of a more international market in Japan.

In a full year, sales volumes of the new Toyota Cavalier are expected to average 20,000 units.

THE TOYOTA CAVALIER IN DETAIL
  • The Toyota Cavalier is a Toyota with a difference. Based on the GM-built Chevrolet Cavalier, it is a curvaceous, medium-size, front-wheel-drive sedan and coupe with distinctive American design and character.
Exterior styling is fresh and youthful. Large headlamps sit above a front bumper panel. This bumper protrudes, as does the rear bumper. Together with the headlamps, the stylized front bumper gives the Toyota Cavalier its unique and appealing "face."
From the side, the Toyota Cavalier's silhouette flows smoothly from nose to tail. Curves once again dominate the rear view, along with the simply-styled combination lamps.
Although cousins under the skin, the Toyota Cavalier sedan and coupe are quite different in terms of overall size and proportions, as the following table shows
  • The Toyota Cavalier's 2.4-liter twin-cam 16-valve engine links to an electronically controlled four-speed automatic transmission, and offers sparkling performance.
This in-line four-cylinder engine (Type T2) has been designed for high torque throughout the low to medium power band. This high torque makes for excellent pulling power and accelerator response.
A two-shaft design balance shaft system also minimizes noise and vibration from the engine at medium and high revolutions, thus aiding smoothness and refinement.
With a capacity of 2,392 cc, the Toyota Cavalier offers a competitive output of 130 PS at 6,000 rpm. Maximum torque of 22.1 kg-m peaks at 4,400 rpm.
In Japan's standard 10•15-mode fuel consumption tests, the Toyota Cavalier records 9.8 km/1, a promising figure for a relatively large engine.
  • The four-speed automatic transmission features electronic control linking engine and transmission. This control system minimizes transmission shocks and makes for smooth gearshifting.
  • Particular attention was paid to adapting the Cavalier's chassis to Japanese road conditions. Steering and braking were all individually tuned for optimum handling, stability, roadholding and ride comfort.
  • The cabin also has been reconfigured for Japanese use. Along with the switch to right-hand-drive, the cabin features many new parts and fittings.
Pedals and seats have been carefully set up taking into account the generally smaller physical characteristics of Japanese people.
The instrument panel, door trim and seats have been conceived around the theme of simple but voluminous curves, the objective being a bright and open cabin space. Switches and levers for wipers, lights, turn signals, and the parking brake have also been reconfigured for right-hand drive. Interior space figures for the Toyota Cavalier are as follows
  • Safety considerations, of course, received top priority. The Toyota Cavalier has dual front SRS airbags and ABS anti-lock brakes as standard. The body structure incorporates progressive impact-absorbing technology to protect passengers in the event of an accident.
The structure is designed to maintain a solid cage for passengers, whether the impact might be from the front, rear, side, or if the car rolls over.
A wide front screen affords excellent driver visibility. Large halogen headlights provide powerful illumination for night driving.
  • The Toyota Cavalier will be sold through 51 "Toyota" channel dealerships (with 1,083 sales outlets as of September 30) throughout Japan.
In the Tokyo area, the Tokyo Toyopet and Tokyo Toyota dealerships will be entrusted with Toyota Cavalier sales. The Osaka Toyopet dealerships will market Toyota Cavaliers in the Osaka area. Maker's Suggested Retail Prices (1996 model year, consumption tax not included) for the new Cavalier are as follows
