Toyota "Origin" Gives New Look to Old Classic
Limited-edition Sedan Marks 100 Millionth Domestically Made Vehicle
Tokyo―TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION (TMC), in commemoration of achieving the 100 million mark in domestically produced Toyota vehicles*, unveiled today the Origin, a masterfully crafted automobile reminiscent of the first-generation Crown passenger car, a classic symbol in Toyota's history.
The exclusive Origin, with only 1,000 units to be offered through Toyota dealers nationwide starting on Nov. 1, combines state-of-the-art automotive technology with the Toyota-cultivated and refined skills of superior craftsmen, whose workmanship is showcased throughout the vehicle.
Origin
Only the best of the best craft the Origin
When it comes to exacting standards of automobile workmanship, the production line of Toyota's luxury flagship―the Century―tops the list. The same master craftsmen employed on this line have been tasked with producing the Origin to ensure that each Origin is a statement in elegance and superb quality.
With a design that is difficult to replicate using mass-production techniques, the Origin's front fenders and quarter panel trim are block-molded under the experienced eyes and hands of these craftsmen, guaranteeing that the seams of the exterior panels reflect both dignity and grace. Expert skill is the secret to connecting the front fender panels and front end panel to create a single seamless unit.
*TMC reached cumulative domestic production of 100 million vehicles on Oct. 4, 1999.
All exterior paint work is carried out employing the same method used in creating traditional Japanese lacquerware. This allows for polished surfaces that are extremely smooth. The deeper shine and more lustrous finish resulting from this method is of the same high quality found in the Century.
Every Origin is produced with minute precision during each assembly process. Again, the trained eyes and hands of skilled craftsmen ensure superior quality when assembling the body, attaching the hood and other parts, and carrying out inspections.
As for the interior, concern for detail, right down to the pitch of the stitching used in creating the genuine leather seats and door trim, underlines the Origin's sense of elegance.
Even the wood used for the center cluster panel and throughout the vehicle is carefully selected for the beauty of its grain.
Tradition in harmony with modern touches
The skills of Toyota's master craftsmen have created an exterior style expertly and seamlessly adapting the tried-and-true look of the first-generation Crown to today's tastes.
A large hood panel and deep-set non-standard round headlamps create a captivating front view. The radiator grille (an updated version of the first-generation Crown's grille) and front bumper (with round fog lamps) combine to create a highly personalized and original look.
The rear doors are hinged at the back, a characteristic feature of the first-generation Crown. This means the doors open outward from the center, much like those of a cupboard or display cabinet. Combined with a rounded roof panel and side panels that appeal to modern tastes, they create an updated lively side view.
A rear window that wraps around to the quarter pillars and a tail fin with an integrated vertical rear combination lamp create a classy rear profile in keeping with the look of the first-generation Crown.
The Origin's roomy interior combines traditional design with impressive functionality and comfort.
The vertically patterned design and piping of the deluxe, ergonomically shaped, genuine leather seats are created by traditional methods for a terrific look.
The finely grained wood used throughout the instrument panel is accented by the genuine leather of the steering wheel and gearshift knob, creating a graceful interior.
The instrument panel features an excellent analog clock and light-emitting dials and needles on the optitron instrumentation for crystal-clear readouts.
An anti-theft engine immobilizer system prevents the engine from being started by any key other than the one with the owner's registered ID code.
The Origin is packaged in a compact body that enables outstanding handling, but boasts an interior that rivals large-class vehicles for roominess and comfort.
Performance appropriate for a luxury car
- Outstanding ride and basic performance
Creating the ride of a luxury car with an advanced powertrainThe Origin's BEAMS*1 2JZ-GE gasoline engine is an inline six-cylinder 3.0-liter engine that features VVT-i*2 and offers ample torque at low and medium engine speeds. It is combined with a highly efficient and responsive ECT-iE transmission (a four-speed automatic [mintelligent] ntransmission with electronically controlled flex lockup), creating the smooth, refined ride of a luxury car.
*1Breakthrough Engine with Advanced Mechanism System
*2VVT-i (Variable Valve Timing-intelligent)A continuously variable valve timing mechanism.
Superior driving stability; riding comfort and quietness
The Origin's FR-layout, four-wheel double-wishbone suspension and high-rigidity body create outstanding handling and driving stability and a soft yet firm ride.
The high-rigidity body and effective placement of anti-vibration and soundproofing materials result in an excellent level of quietness.
- World-class safety features
Active safetyThe Origin's highly refined chassis ensures excellent emergency avoidance. The Origin also comes with several of the latest preventive safety systems as standard features, including breakthrough VSC*, ABS, TRC and brake assist.
*VSC (Vehicle Stability Control)A system for controlling vehicle stability.
Passive safetySeveral of the latest collision safety features are standard, including a collision-safe GOA* body, front seat SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) air bags, SRS side air bags, and SRS curtain shield air bags.
The front seat design incorporates the WIL (Whiplash Injury Lessening) concept, lessening the shock to occupants' necks during a collision from the rear.
*GOA (Global Outstanding Assessment)A world-class safety evaluation.
- Consideration for the environment
CO2 reduction
Features such as the high-efficiency ECT-iE transmission and the engine's VVT-i mechanism reduce CO2 emissions and lower fuel consumption.
RecyclingToyota's new TSOP (Toyota Super Olefin Polymer) material is used in parts such as the front and rear bumpers. TSOP is a very easily recycled thermoplastic resin that helps reduce vehicle weight, and which features improved strength, rigidity and molding characteristics.
To reduce the use of environmentally hazardous materials, the radiator and other parts are lead-free.
- ITS (Intelligent Transport System) features
The Origin's Electronic Multivision system, with a power pop-up wide (7") display, uses DVD voice navigation to greatly increase the speed of the route-finding process, and can pinpoint destinations as specific as individual street addresses. It can be connected to multiplex FM broadcasts and VICS (Vehicle Information and Communication System) receiver equipment, and is compatible with Toyota's MONET (Mobile Network) system, an information service for vehicles.
The radar cruise control feature (standard) detects a preceding vehicle and the traffic lane using equipment such as laser radar sensors and steering sensors. It controls the distance to the preceding vehicle according to traveling speed, controlling the Origin's speed within the set limit.
The car navigation-assisted shift control feature uses route information obtained from the car navigation system to detect upcoming curves and shifts down as the driver brakes.
