TOYOTA TO MARK 60th ANNIVERSARY OF ITS
ESTABLISHMENT WITH COMMEMORATIVE PROJECTS
Tokyo―TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION (TMC) announced today a number of projects it will undertake next year in Japan to celebrate the 60th anniversary of its establishment, which will be reached on November 3, 1997. Toyota's commemorative projects will focus mainly on promoting the development of science and technology and encouraging cultural activities.
TMC was founded in 1937 with the objective of laying the foundations for Japan's domestic automobile industry. With the completion of the Koromo Plant (now called the Honsha Plant) in 1938, the company embarked on mass production. Since this beginning, thanks to customers' patronage and the cooperation of its dealers and suppliers worldwide, TMC has been able to deal successfully with many issues, such as the turbulence of the postwar period, the liberalization of trade and capital, the oil crisis and tightened emission control regulations, exchange rate fluctuations, and trends towards globalization.
As part of the 60th anniversary projects, Toyota will support four programs to help promote science and technology, including the Advanced Science and Technology Support Program. Also, TMC will present a series of Toyota Philharmonic Master Players Berlin concerts. The orchestra, composed mainly of members of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, will play in a number of major Japanese cities. To enhance its public relations activities, TMC will start construction of an annex to the Toyota Automobile Museum, originally built to help mark the firm's 50th anniversary. Also, the Toyota Exhibition Hall, built to commemorate TMC's 40th anniversary, will be completely renovated. Furthermore, of the vehicles that TMC will provide for use during the Nagano Olympics, about 600 will be donated to welfare organizations nationwide at the end of the Games.
Details of the commemorative projects are given in the Reference attached. TMC expects the overall cost to reach about ¥7 billion.
