TMUK Achieves 80% European Content Target

Production of Carina E Wagon To Be Added Next Year

Tokyo―TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION (TMC) announced today that Toyota Motor Manufacturing (UK) Ltd. (TMUK) has achieved its 80% European content target six months ahead of schedule. The company also announced an increase in the range of Carina E models produced at its Burnaston Plant. From the middle of next year, the Carina E Wagon, which is currently produced in Japan, will be built in the U.K. This means that all Carina E body types will now be made in the U.K.

"The fact that we have been able to reach 80% local content ahead of schedule is a real tribute to the efforts of our members and the extent to which the European component industry has risen to the challenge," said Yukihisa Hirano, managing director of TMUK.

Some key TMUK achievements over the last two years are as follows
  • Start of Carina E production on December 16, 1992
  • Production of 37,000 units in 1993, with the Carina E Lift Back version added the same year
  • Second production shift added in February 1994
  • Announcement of export start in July 1994 of 1.6-liter engines to Toyotasa's plant in Turkey
  • Exports from the Deeside engine plant of 36,000 cylinder block and crankshaft sets to TMC in Japan in 1994

TMUK's 1994 production target for the Carina E is 85,000 units, of which 75% will be exported to 17 European countries. TMUK expects production to rise to approximately 90,000 units in 1995 thanks to a more buoyant European market. The current number of employees at TMUK stands at 1,924 people.
