Toyota Markets U.S.-Built Avalon in Japan

Tokyo―TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION (TMC) announced that, starting from today, it will market the U.S.-built Avalon, a new luxury passenger car, through its Toyopet dealers nationwide. The Avalon was largely designed and engineered by Toyota Technical Center, U.S.A., Inc., in cooperation with TMC. The car is manufactured by Toyota Motor Manufacturing, U.S.A., Inc. in Georgetown, Kentucky and exported from the U.S. by Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. (TMS).

Avalon, the flagship sedan of the Toyota Division of TMS, is a large, luxurious model reflecting its U.S. origins. It meets the requirements of Japanese customers seeking a roomy, high-quality, front-wheel-drive sedan.

This U.S. model has been modified for the Japanese market and comes equipped with right-hand-drive steering and other special features, including fluorescent analog instrumentation for improved legibility and a telescopic steering column with a motorized tilt feature.

Avalon's Main Features

  1. Roomy, high-quality interior for maximum cabin comfort
  2. Subtle exterior design reflecting quality and refinement
  3. Powerful 3.0-liter all-aluminum V6 engine for smooth driving performance
  4. Outstanding safety features―ABS, TRC, and driver-side air bag―fitted as standard equipment on all grades. Environment-friendly design and materials.

Interior

Cabin comfort has been maximized by creating a roomy, high-quality interior by adopting a front-wheel-drive engine layout. Cabin space rates top in the 3.0-liter-sedan class. Cabin dimensions―2,050mm (L) x 1,530mm (W) x 1,195mm (H)
―allow ample head and leg room in both front and rear seats, which can comfortably accommodate passengers up to 190cm tall.

The interior features a new, bright, plush adobe beige color, and uncluttered design, from the instrument panel to the door rim, accentuating the spaciousness of the cabin. Cloth seating is standard, and genuine leather is available as an option on the Avalon 3.0 G.

For Japan, standard equipment on all grades includes a telescopic steering column with a motorized tilt system and an instrument panel with fluorescent meters for increased legibility.

The 528-liter trunk space (VDA) can accommodate four large suitcases, and greater ease of use is realized by making the trunk opening lower.

Careful attention to the design of all components, including the transmission, to minimize vibration and noise ensures outstanding cabin silence.

Exterior

The long, wide body―4,845mm (L) x 1,785mm (W) x 1,435mm (H)―is accentuated by the use of large head lamps and a solid grille. The independent rear combination lamps and wide rear emphasize Avalon's crisp, refined lines.

Engine

The new 3.0-liter, V-type, six-cylinder 1MZ-FE engine provides outstanding fuel economy at both low and high speeds. This is accomplished through the use of aluminum and the latest engine design technology. The engine is 30kg lighter than Toyota's previous V-type, six-cylinder 3VZ-FE engine.

Avalon's 9.5km/liter fuel consumption rating, the best available in the 3.0-liter engine class (10•15 mode), is achieved by using optimized combustion chamber design, a high 10.5:1 compression ratio, reduced friction made possible by increasing the precision of moving parts, and more refined ignition control.

Suspension

The front suspension features MacPherson struts, a stabilizer bar, and gas-filled shock absorbers. The rear dual-link rear suspension has gas-filled shock absorbers and a stabilizer bar. Antivibration subframes for both front and rear suspensions reduce vibration and noise.

Active Safety

A four-wheel antilock brake system (ABS) and a traction-control system (TRC) have been installed as standard equipment on all grades for outstanding emergency avoidance. A clear field of vision in inclement weather is assured with efficient rain-clearing gutters and rear window moldings. Safety is further enhanced by the use of highly legible fluorescent instrumentation.

Passive Safety

A driver-side supplemental restraint system (SRS) air bag is fitted as standard equipment on all grades, and passenger-side SRS air bags are standard on the 3.0 G grade model. The center-rear seat is fitted with a three-point seat belt featuring an emergency locking retractor (ELR).

The crash-impact-absorbing structure (CIAS) adopted for the body provides passenger protection meeting the new U.S. side-impact safety standards.

Environmental Considerations

In addition to the new, lighter engine, value-engineered parts have reduced overall weight to achieve the best fuel-economy ranking in the 3.0-liter car class.

Highly recyclable Toyota Super Olefin Polymer has been used for both the front and rear bumpers. Resin scrap produced in manufacturing is recycled and parts are labeled to identify resin materials. Ozone-friendly coolant is used for the air-conditioning system, and production methods use no fluorocarbons (CFCs). As with all Toyota cars, only asbestos-free parts are used.
