Toyota City, Japan, September 24, 2026―Last December, the Toyota Group, inspired by Yokohama's history and the city's vision for a "City of Cultural and Artistic Creation," opened THE MOVEUM YOKOHAMA by TOYOTA GROUP ("THE MOVEUM YOKOHAMA")*1 at Yamashita Pier as a venue offering "MOVE" through both movement and emotion. Visitors enjoyed an immersive experience combining stunning visuals and music in a vast space.

With this reopening, THE MOVEUM YOKOHAMA will launch a new program, The Impressionist Artist Monet and Ukiyo-e: The Beauty of Japan That Captivated Monet, on Saturday, October 24, 2026. This program focuses on the innovative artistic expressions created by ukiyo-e artists, including Katsushika Hokusai, and explores their influence on the Impressionist painter Claude Monet.

In addition to immersive art exhibitions, THE MOVEUM YOKOHAMA will offer art activities and workshops, and introduce the Toyota Group's cultural activities. By creating a space for cultural exchange open to the local community, Toyota aims to broaden opportunities for cultural experiences and generate synergies throughout the Yokohama area.
The Toyota Group aims to go beyond simply providing transportation to deliver "MOVE" that touches people's hearts, thereby creating new opportunities for inspiration and learning through culture. We hope visitors will look forward to the new emotional "MOVE" experience that THE MOVEUM YOKOHAMA has to offer.

Please see the official website (https://global.toyota/info/themoveum/) for more details and ticket information.

About the Program

The Impressionist Artist Monet and Ukiyo-e: The Beauty of Japan That Captivated Monet

One of the key sources of inspiration that broadened the world of Monet's art was ukiyo-e prints from Japan. The unique compositions, views of nature, and aesthetics created by Hokusai, Hiroshige, Utamaro, and others offered Monet new perspectives in his ongoing exploration of changes in light and nature, enriching the breadth of expression in Impressionism. This exhibition allows visitors to experience art unbound, presenting the dialogue between Monet's works and Japanese art. It takes Impressionist paintings outside their frames to fill the entire space in a fusion of imagery, music, architecture, and sound. Rather than merely looking at the art, visitors can experience a new viewpoint born from the encounter between Japanese and European art as they wander through this world.

Monet's dining room: the ukiyo-e space that entranced Monet

Monet lived in his house at Giverny from 1883 until the end of his life. The dining room, a space that grew to symbolize that house, was decorated with prints by Hokusai, Hiroshige, and Utamaro that Monet treasured. The venue showcases a space inspired by that room.

Ukiyo-e Gallery: Monet, Ukiyo-e, and the spaces between

Japanese ukiyo-e entranced Monet. This exhibit focuses on the bold compositions and richness of expression found in ukiyo-e, as well as the skills of the craftsmen who created these works. Through ukiyo-e depicting the lifestyles and cultures of the people of Edo, visitors can discover the depth of Japanese art that so fascinated Western artists when they first encountered it.

Learning events for families (scheduled)

Family-oriented workshops and study programs are planned with the goal of fostering children's creativity through encounters with art and culture. Opportunities to combine cultural experiences with learning will be provided.
