TWO MILLION COROLLAS EXPORTED

TOKYO―Toyota Motor Sales Co., Ltd., announced today that it exported its two-millionth Corolla during July 1976, thus making Toyota the first automaker in Japan to have exported two million units of a single passenger car series. It took Toyota nine years and nine months to set this record.

The two million mark came within sight in June when the cumulative total of Corolla exports reached 1,971,747 units. An additional 36,009 units were exported during July, raising the cumulative total as of July 31, 1976, to 2,007,756 units.

  1. Figures for 1976 are Jan. through July only
  2. Cumulative total of Corollas exported as of July 31, 1976, was 2,007,756 units
  3. One-millionth Corolla was exported in October 1973 and two-millionth in July 1976

Toyota originally researched and developed the Corolla with the aim of making it a passenger car that would serve the needs of the average family around the world. It became an immediate best-seller when Toyota introduced it in October 1966, and since then it has continued to win wide support from all segments of customers in Japan and overseas. It was ranked in 1974 as the world's top production model (only models produced in home country; excluding vehicles produced in Communist countries), and it maintained its top ranking in 1975.

The millionth Corolla went overseas in October 1973, and the second million units were thus exported over a period of two years and nine months. Domestically, meanwhile, Corolla registrations reached a cumulative total of three million units in June 1976.
