Aim

  • Regarding people as our greatest asset and developing the talent that will shape the future based on the philosophy that "monozukuri (manufacturing) begins with developing people"

Developing People Who Act for the Sake of Others

  • The common foundation for Toyota's human resource development is as follows:
  • Based on the philosophy of "for the sake of others," Toyota develops people who acquire TPS skills―thoroughly eliminating Muda (waste) and shortening lead times―and embody that philosophy through their behavior.
  • Guided by the principle of "Respect for People," individuals with diverse knowledge, skills, and values respect and support one another while continuously pursuing improvement, thereby contributing to the growth of both individuals and the organization.

"Making Ever-better-Cars", "Best-in-Town"

  • By enabling genba (frontline workplaces) rooted in their communities to act autonomously and make "ever-better cars" that respond to customer needs and social issues that differ by region, Toyota aims to become the "best-in-town" company―loved by and relied upon by the local community.
  • To support this, management and employees engage in dialogue at genba in each region and company, and work together to create optimal talent development and workplace environments that support the sustainable growth of both individuals and the organization.

Initiatives

Materiality (Key Issues)

  • Under its mission of "Producing Happiness for All," Toyota identified six material issues* as it transforms into a mobility company.
    * Expanding the Value of Mobility; Safety & Reliability; Coexistence of Humanity & the Earth; Supporting the Community & Employment; Active Contribution by All; and Strong Production & Business Operation.
  • Of the above, "Supporting the Community & Employment" and "Active Contribution by All" were translated into specific issues related to people working at Toyota. (Respect for Human Rights, Human Resource Development, Dialogue with Employees, DE&I, Labor Practices, Health and Safety)

Toyota's Human Rights Policy

Human Rights Due Diligence*1

To meet the expectations of our stakeholders, we refer to international norms such as the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights to tackle issues related to human rights.

To exercise human rights due diligence within the supply chain*2, Toyota utilizes the Supplier Sustainability Guidelines, which specifically state that Toyota respects human rights and expects its supplier network to also have this perspective. Working together with our suppliers on risk monitoring, developing countermeasures, tracking, and remediation allows Toyota to provide guidance and support to potentially affected stakeholders.

Furthermore, to be more transparent, we work together with external stakeholders including NGOs to both understand the societal expectations and assess our prioritized activities accordingly. By doing so, we hope to engage in corporate activities that are fair and impartial.

*1 The process used for the identification, prevention, and mitigation of negative human rights impacts.
*2 Refers to the entire process of vehicle manufacturing, from the procurement of raw materials and components for a product to assembly, including component manufacturers and materials.

Details of our human rights initiatives are available in the Sustainability Data Book. For more information on the following initiatives, please see the "Value Chain Collaboration" page.

Aim

  • Contribute to employees' peace of mind and the sustainable growth of local communities by ensuring stable employment and maintaining and improving working conditions

  • We place importance on achieving both of the following: responsibly creating an environment where employees can work with peace of mind and in good health, and enabling employees to contribute to maintaining and enhancing the company's competitiveness through autonomous Kaizen (continuous improvement) and growth.
  • In addition to complying with laws, regulations, and practices in each country and region, we promote creating an environment where each employee can work with peace of mind and in good health.

Initiatives

  • We focus on creating workplaces where everyone at Toyota can work safely, maintain their physical and mental well-being, and continue to thrive at work.

    • Philosophy for health and safety: the "Toyota Motor Corporation's Declaration of Health Commitment" and the "Basic Philosophy for Safety and Health"
    • Health and safety policy: Globally expanding the "Inheritance and Evolution of the Interdependent Health and Safety Culture"

Philosophy for health and safety

The physical and mental health of our employees is the driving force behind our good performance, and our top management has announced, in Toyota Motor Corporation's Declaration of Health Commitment issued in 2017, that Toyota aims to become a health-first company.
With regard to safety, the message "Safe work is the gate to all work. Let us pass through this gate" has long been passed on as the basic philosophy for safety and health, and incorporates Toyota's strong desire for its employees to never be involved in occupational accidents.

  • Declaration of Health Commitment
  • Basic Philosophy for Safety and Health

Health and safety function policy

Aiming to develop human resources and workplaces capable of positively thinking and taking action to safeguard their health and safety, Toyota is promoting the Inheritance and Evolution of the Interdependent Health and Safety Culture. We are working, on a global scale, toward developing people to help them work in a lively manner and enhance their ability to predict risks, and also developing workplaces to help create a positive work environment friendly to every single worker.
