WHITE NIGHT

The summer sun hardly sets for those that dwell in the North.
In a world of snow and ice, a warm breath.
Songs of light and the rustle of nature waking.

Inuit Songs from above the Arctic Circle
Sámi Yoik from Northern European
Ancient Poetry from Iceland
A Song of Forgiveness from Northern Sweden

The sounds from the North weave together the tales of survival and tenacity.

Artists

FINLAND

TAPANI RINNE

Tapani Rinne is one of the foremost contemporary musicians in Finland. Experimenting with jazz and electronics, Tapani's music takes on many different forms. From his collaboration with Edvard Vesala and the RinneRadio project, to his work with Saami musician Wimme Saari, and onward to composing soundtracks for film and television, Tapani continues to reinvent himself and his music.

LATVIA

VLADIMIR LESCHIOV

Vladimir Leschiov is a Latvian artist, animation director, producer, and teacher. His short animated films have participated in major animation and short film festivals, winning numerous awards. In 2007, Vladimir founded his own film studio, LUNOHOD, which was renamed LESCHIOV in 2024. Works from his animated films have been exhibited in Latvia, Portugal, Italy, and Japan.

FINLAND

WIMME SAARI

Wimme Saari carries on the tradition of "joik," the vocal art of the Sámi people—the indigenous inhabitants of far-northern Lapland. Wimme combines his own style of Sámi singing with improvisations and the sounds of the animals around him. He has played with many other musicians as well as released a few solo CDs as well. When playing with Tapani Rinne, they form an incredibly fluid team that almost feels like they are traversing time and space.

CANADA

TITUS ALLOOLOO

Baffin Island. In Canada's far northern archipelago, is a remote wilderness defined by magnificent fjords and glaciers, a place where the culture of the Inuit, the indigenous people of the North, remains deeply rooted. Titus, a former Canadian politician and supporter of Inuit rights, is a hunter who has revived the traditional Inuit practice of dog sledding. Forging a strong bond with his dogs, he races across the frozen sea, keeping alive an Inuit culture that thrives in harmony with nature.

CANADA

TANYA TAGAQ with CELINA KALLUK
JESSE ZUBOT

Tagaq is a Canadian (Inuk) throat singer from Cambridge Bay, Nunavut, Canada. She is known for her collaborations with Björk, the Kronos Quartet and Shooglenifty. Her album Aninism won the 2014 Polaris Prize. In this scene she performs with her cousin Celina a traditional kataqjjaq. The kataqjjaq is a song drawn from the sounds of nature that was also an entertaining game. It was a “vocal tug-of-war”, two women clinging to each other and swaying rhythmically, looking into each other's eyes. One of them sings a short, rhythmic base, to which the other responds. The game usually ends when one of them runs out of breath or starts laughing.

ICELAND

VOCES THULES

Voces Thules was formed as an Icelandic music ensemble in 1992. The ensemble consists of five male singers who have studied in Reykjavík, London and Vienna, specializing in Icelandic medieval and contemporary music.

SWEDEN

LENA WILLEMARK

Lena Willemark is a Swedish traditional music fiddler, singer, and composer, who combines elements of folk and jazz. Lena grew up in the forest with the region's folk music, and then in Stockholm in the 1970s also had contact to jazz. For several decades Lena has been widening her scope through collaborations with jazz musicians and other artists.

SWEDEN AND ICELAND

LENA WILLEMARK with VOCES THULES

Here we have an interesting combination. Voces Thules is singing a song in Icelandic about the rising sun and how it is too bright and difficult to look at, while Lena is singing in Swedish about how warm and pleasant the rising sun feels.
