The Corolla turns into an SUV! Since I enjoy diving and photography on my days off, I started developing the design by imagining how I'd use the car myself. Using the car in town during the week and on the weekend, using it for my hobbies such as carrying my equipment to go diving or to the mountains. By refining the design through repeated discussions amongst team members, we've achieved to create an SUV that's stylish yet practical.

A perfectly-sized Corolla Cross. It was a lot of fun to be part of the team creating a car that I'd actually consider buying for myself. As a global model to be sold in many different countries and regions, decisions were being overturned so it was very tough until the final design was fixed. As a car for young families like myself, it'd be great to make them happy.

In order for it to be loved by Corolla fans in Japan and across the world, the interior is designed with a spacious and solid feel. The surface of the instrument panel, covered with thick padding, generously transitions outwards from the center to emphasize a horizontal expansion. Pillar-like metallic ornaments firmly support the instrument panel, expressing toughness. I had a lot of fun with the team designing the interior.

Throughout its 50-year history, it's a first for a Corolla to offer an SUV version. All functional elements have been rearranged to suit the SUV layout; the low instrument panel enhances drivability and the padding that flows through to the door trim provides a protective feel. We aimed to create a design that makes use of the practical space intended for family use.

For the Corolla Cross, while expressing an SUV-like "toughness", color schemes and preferences that cater to different countries and regions were also taken into account. As for the domestic market, a slightly sophisticated and urban color scheme was considered in order to appeal to a wider generation of customers. I want my parents to drive it as well! lol.
